The BBC aint brave enough 10.11.2008 | 21:06:45

I fear that the bbc will never release Q in a way that will satisfy us true fans. They will tie themselves in knots to be as PC as they can and some of Spikes sketches will give the poxy Islington lefties that run the BBC a heart attack.Whilst Spike sailed close to the wind with many of his shows with regard to race the key point is that it was funny.Uproariously so.All i have are my childhood memories of the genius that was Q and that is all that we will be left with

i was brought up by parents who fed me goons, sellers, sykes etc,
had a grandfather who could stitch you up and you wouldn't realise till 30 minutes later, went to school with like minded friends and teachers who understood the humour.
Spike was such an underrated brain and by their own admission Cleese and crew say that Spike was doing Python long before they did, what a wonderfully respectfull comment. I dont think its his non pc ways that stop his material being aired (you can still see alfe garnett!) more that he said just what he thought and would have upset countless BBC bosses.
i have the set of goons remastered on cd but it is frowned upon for me to play, bloody women they just don't get it, i'm on my third and none understand it like my mother, she still quotes from our bible and at 89 now sounds more like Minnie Banister than Minnie ever did ! bring back proper humour, i think i speak for so many when i say "I miss Spike"
although i keep him alive in my son's and grandchildren who love this simple humour i would love so many more to enjoy this manic genious. lets all write to the BBC again !!

I was a mere 8 years old when my father introduced me to Spike's humour and I've thanked him ever since.
I seem to remember the Q series were broadcast on a Thursday at 9pm on BBC2 and were unmissable in my house. I always went to bed with a stitch in my side because of it.
I wish would the Beeb would see sense and release all the Q series and There's A Lot Of It About on DVD because it'll save me from converting what I have on VHS (sent from Australia) by my Uncle on to DVD.

Why is there any question 14.10.2008 | 23:49:19

Q series, it's extremely funny, innovative and influential most of the time, when it's not you get to decide why it doesn't work, many people find it insulting but everybody finds it something, for all these reasons I want it, it's a fortune of laughs and for whoever has been so idiotic not to release it it'll make a fortune.

All the ´Q´ stuff I can get my hands on still cracks me up as much as the first time I saw it.
True there are the odd scenes that to me are less funny than others - But on the whole I think its bloody funny!

Unfortunately, the praise of 'Q' seems to have a lot to do with looking back at it with 'rose-tinted spectacles'.
I think you'll find it's nowhere near as funny as you remember: I acquired Q6, Q7, Q8 and There's A Lot Of It About on 'bootleg' DVD and I can see why the BBC have never released it on DVD: it's just not that funny.
A brave attempt by old guys doing surreal, quickfire comedy as a hybrid of The Goon Show and Monty Python's Flying Circus - but it's very inconsistent.

All in all, a comedic Curate's Egg....at best.

My spectacles aren't 'rosetinted'. On the contrary! I'd made this site when I had only seen compilations of Q. After having seen Q6, Q7 and Q8 recently, I'm really surprised that the show is even better than I thought! There are perhaps funnier shows than Q, but there is none that original, creative and visually attractive. And I much prefer 'old guys' of a caliber of a David Lodge, a Bob Todd, a John Bluthal, a Keith Smith, a Alan Clare than persons like Noel Fielding or David Walliams or Simon Pegg. And the BBC keeps releasing their unfunny, predictable and boring stuff, but no Q and no Goodies and no Peter Cook.

I total agree with the response to this view. It seems to me the BBC have a peculiar prejudice towards Milligan. If your a modern day comic actor with a good lawyer, you get all your crap chucked out in as many box sets as you like. I love seeing all those people Milligan performed with. Wonderful character's, some not trained actors, some he went through the war with. All of it absurdly priceless.

I cannot understand the reasoning behind BBC not releasing Milligan's legacy on DVD for countless generations to enjoy. He remains one of the finest comedians to grace our airwaves and there was simply no limit to his wonderful comedic musings. He was way ahead of his time and many "comedians" today owe him a great debt for being the creative genius that he is.
RIP Spike.

Erratic but unmatchably brilliant at his best. His current obscurity is hard to fathom, unless he isn't seen as the right kind of anti-establishment figure, unlike say the comparably-inventive but highly-Londonista Peter Cook, whose stock has risen vastly since his death.

Thankfully someone is bothering to do this. I bring up the subject of the Q series with people, and they just look at me blankly and say "Huh?". This is a travesty which must end! Thinks Boobs! Ying! Po! Fill in the blanks!

I managed to get my hands on The best of q on vhs on ebay. I would love to see the q series on DVD.

There are a couple of things I've heard regarding this series. The BBC used Video tape way back in the 60's and the tapes were £500 each and £500 in the 60's was a lot of money. The average wage in 1969 was £15 per week. It was just to expensive to keep shows so they just recorded over them. This is why there is so little footage around from the 60's.

The other thing I've heard is they won't repeat them on TV because he was not very politically correct. Particularly stuff like the Arabs sketch on the best of q where he refers to them as wogs.

I think it shouldn't matter as the DVD will be brought by fans who've seen his stuff anyway.

If any one out there has copies they taped off the TV could they get in touch with me. I would be prepared to pay cash and donate royalties to Spike. There is nothing stopping fans releasing the material themselves so long as royalties are apropriated to Spike's estate.

I've just watched the six episodes of Q6. I cannot ever recall seeing a more inventive, creative and unique series. There are some superb comic ideas, and a first rate cast to carry them out. Proof, yet again, there just is nobody like Spike Milligan.

As Spike suffered with his depressions , he still spent his entire life trying and succeeding in making people laugh. For me that comfort has been life saving.
So here's to Saint Spike...
I can hear Spike now saying..."Wot a load of old bollocks!"
I loves anyway Spike!

What are we going to do now?... 06.03.2008 | 20:33:53

It'll be such a good series to have on DVD, split into chapters you could jump to favourite sketches, like the MPFC box set allows. It's a shame Spike didn't have global success like the pythons otherwise i think the BBC would know they had a money spinner with mass appeal,DVD's, merchandise etc. He was a true national treasure.

When Spike died, U.K. Gold received lots of letters requesting repeats of not only the 'Q' series, but also 'The World Of Beachcomber' ( I wrote a couple of 'em! ). The station replied that it had passed on these requests to their 'forward planning team'. No more was heard from them on the subject. Needless to say, in 2008, we are still waiting for them to be reshown!
